ICT Quiz Competition for Mamobi Prisons JHS1 Students

The Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing (GINKS) has successfully organized an ICT Quiz competition for Mamobi Prisons1 Junior High School in Accra as parts of its activities.

The quiz competition is an effort to test the ICT skill of Junior High Students, to prepare them towards their final examination and also enable them compete with other schools in similar competition in the future.

It is generally believed that ICTs can empower teachers and students, promote change and foster the development of 21st century, transform teaching and learning processes from being highly teacher-dominated to student-centered, and that this transformation will result in increased learning gains for students, creating and allowing for opportunities for students to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities, information reasoning skills, communication skills, and other higher-order thinking skills.

ICT is so important in the world today that it makes it imperative for every student to be competent in the use of ICT for the many tasks that he/she will have to accomplish in and after school. Currently the studies of ICT has been approved and included in the schools syllabus in Ghana and has become an examinable subjects in schools in Ghana

As a result, GINKS structured the questions for the ICT Quiz competition around the ICT syllabus designed for schools by the Ghana Education Service.

 

The Headmistress of Mamobi Prisons1 Junior High School, Mrs Elizabeth Agama giving the opening speech said the students body as well as teachers are pleased to have officials from GINKS come over to organized the maiden edition of ICT Quiz competition to help shape students skills in the study of ICT which has now become an examinable subject in Ghana.

She added that the school is privileged to be selected for this ICT Quiz competition and that it is a step in the right direction which is going to do a lot of good to the school and students body.

The coordinator of GINKS, Mr. Ibrahim Inusah said this is just the beginning as GINKS has plans to build capacity of students in the use of ICT for development. He further stated that the bigger picture a competition among schools where the winner will be awarded massively.Ibrahim reiterate that the group that will win the competition today will take home prizes and will have the opportunity to enter into bigger competition with other schools in the near future.

He stated that the Quiz is to serve as a motivation for the study of ICT as a course among students which will help prepare them for the job market and  also to equip and test students knowledge in ICT.

Starting the competition, the Quiz Master of the day, Mr. Kirchuffs Atengble advised students to take the Quiz serious and learn from it as the questions are derived from the JHS ICT syllabus. Kirchuffs urged students to do their best in answering the questions to qualify them to the next stage of the competition with other schools for the grand prize and award.

The competition was structured into 3 groups namely Group Red, Group Yellow and Group Green. Group Red comprised of the following students Gideon Ankude, Bright Braakye, Promise Ablodepe whiles Group Yellow comprised of Samuel Attah, Noah Tornu, Emmanuel Awolipungu and Group Green also comprised of Gloria Darkey, Zeinabu Yussif and Joshua Takyi.

The competition which was very keenly contested started with questions which demand answers for 3 points and a minor for 1 point.

At the end of the first round of the quiz competition, Group Red had 13 points, Group Yellow had 9 points and Group Green had 16 points respectively.

Questions for the second round were for participants to listen carefully and pick out the odd one out of a list of terms.

Each group had a single change to answer the question within 15 seconds but failure to answer the question will give the opponent the opportunity to answer the same question within 5 seconds for 1 point.

At the end of the second round, Group Red had 13 points, Group Yellow had 12 points whiles Group Green also had 19 points.

At the end of the 3rd round of the competition, the Quiz master moved onto a True or False questions to the contestants to answer each question within 15 seconds for 3 points. Each group did their best in this round of the competition with Group Red having 18 points, Group Yellow having 20 points and Group Green also having 15 points respectively.

The last and 4th round which was built on list of abbreviations was keenly contested as each group did their utmost best to win the competition but at the end of round 4, Group Red had 11 points, Group Yellow had 8 points and Group Green also had 4 points.

Each group did their best but running up the entire competition, Group Yellow had a total point of 49 whiles Group Green also has a total point of 54 with Group Red emerging as the winners of the maiden edition of the ICT Quiz competition organized by GINKS with 55 points.

Mr. Ibrahim Inusah thanks all the contestants and adding that although some were ahead of others, they all did well in the maiden edition of the ICT Quiz competition and urged them to continue learning more into ICT as course to help boast their knowledge to be champions in the grand competition involving other schools.

The Headmistress and the entire students’ body were full of enthusiasm and thank GINKS for organizing this educative competition and also took the opportunity to present all the awards and prizes to all the contesting students for a good job.

Students also expressed their gratitude to GINKS for the opportunity and honour done the school by the organization of ICT Quiz Competition.
