Multiple award winner Airtel Ghana has partnered the Ministry of Communication to celebrate International Telecommunication Union Girls in ICT Day. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in April, as an awareness-raising initiative designed to promote tech careers and studies to a new generation of girls and young women with an interest in becoming ICT creators.
Airtel Ghana supported this initiative by donating modems and data as prizes for participants. Speaking at the presentation, Mrs. Hannah Agbozo, Director for Legal and Corporate Affairs at Airtel Ghana said,"A career in ICT allows girls to use their creativity, work in international environments, and participate in shaping our future.Girls and young women who learn coding, apps development and computer science will have powerful tools at their disposal to drive economic prosperity for themselves, and overall socio-economic development for their communities."
Accepting the donation and support from Airtel Ghana, Mr. Mahama AbukariNuhu, Deputy Director, Research Statistics and Information Management at the Ministry of Communications said, "The IT industry is not necessarily the first choice of the majority of girls in Ghana when they think of their potential professional career. By being part of the Girls in ICT Day movement, the Ministry of Communication wants to contribute to an awareness shift and we are happy to have partnered with Airtel Ghana".
Girls in ICT Day', established in 2010 by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), aims to encourage, educate, and empower girls and young women to pursue studies and careers in ICT-related industries. Through this internationally recognized day, young women get a behind-the-scenes look at leading ICT companies like Airtel Ghana. By providing this firsthand glimpse, Airtel Ghana hopes that a new generation of young women will be inspired by technology and its transformational power.
Airtel Ghana has taken the lead by advancing, collaborating and engaging with relevant stakeholders in promoting girls in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Airtel also led the first ever innovative start up accelerator program called Airtel Catapult your Business, acompetition which presents a platform for young women in STEM to pitch a business idea for seed funding and mentorship.
